Small Bedroom Design: The Reveal (Part 3)

The hardest part about blogging a teenage bedroom isn’t the design or the budget….it’s the teenagers. Their rooms are basically nests of mixed-up clean and dirty laundry, abandoned drinks, and random dumbbells. Which is exactly why you haven’t seen this space before, even though it’s been finished for a while.

The reason you’re seeing it now is because I recently fell into a 24-hour window where the room was uninhabited. One boy moved out (to another room in the house, not out-out), the other boy hadn’t moved in yet, and I had a clean slate. An opportunity. So I grabbed my cleaning supplies and touch-up paint and got to work.

The result? You’re seeing the rarest version of this room: the empty-but-not-empty stage. It’s decorated and has everything it needs…it just doesn’t have that extra layer of “teenager actually living here” personality. Which makes it the perfect time to show you.

Quick Recap

If you missed the first two posts in this little mini-series, here’s the short version:

Part 1: Construction – designing the addition, its challenges and limitations, framing, drywall, and bed placement ideas.

Part 2: Paint – Sherwin-Williams Still Water review and why I went dark in a small space.

And now we’re here, Part 3: the reveal.

A small bedroom is drenched in a dark color. Built-in bed nook and warm brown accents keep it from feeling cold.

I actually love how this room turned out, it’s currently my favorite bedroom in the house. The other ones have potential to take that crown (most of them have better/bigger/more functional footprints), but I love the color, the coziness, the warm accents…it feels like the room is saying, “Come, lie down, take a load off. You earned it. Don’t worry about all that stuff on your to-do list. Get comfortable. Sleep in. I got you.”

I’m not really one to put words in a room’s mouth (the audacity), but the one day I was in here cleaning and painting, I fell asleep. I didn’t mean to…I never nap. Never. But this room…it lures you in. I even have proof, because there’s too many kids with phones in this house to get away with an undocumented nap.

Anyway, let’s tour the room. Before we get too deep into it, let me just say that there are still a few things I want to do in here, which won’t happen till we do another resident switch a year or so from now. It needs a rug for sure, and I’d like to add a photo or two to the gallery wall to balance it out. I’d also like to replace the current chair with something more comfortable and vintage.

Alright. Let’s start with the bed.

A king-size bed built into an area with a low ceiling.

First of all, it’s very comfortable. If you are in the market for a new mattress, I cannot recommend Purple mattresses enough. We have one in the primary bedroom as well, and it’s just….I’m obsessed.

The orangy brown quilt and shams are from Crate & Barrel, sadly discontinued. I did find a similar one on Quince though, it has the same laid-back/organic look and great reviews. They actually have a ton of options in this awesome terracotta color, here are all the options.

The sheets are flannel from The Company Store. I bought them solely because the color and pattern is perfect for this room. It brings the wall color and the quilt color together, and isn’t too feminine. Both boys who have lived in here had commented on how much they like the flannel, and they are nice. Would I get them for my own room? No…too hot for me. These exact ones are discontinued, but here is a link to the closest thing (visually) I could find.

Sherwin-Williams Still Water - a deep, moody blue with gray-green undertones.

The gold sconces are from Amazon (very budget-friendly), and underneath the bed are large built-in drawers. The room doesn’t have a closet, so these are great…necessary, for storage.

The whole little area is just incredibly cozy. It’s even cozier when the built-in shelves are full of books, photos, and model airplanes.

Moving clockwise around the room, next we have this nightstand/sitting area spot. Once the room was painted and the bedding was on, the room started giving me “snowy mountain cabin” vibes. The previous resident really likes animals, which is how this wall of prints came about. Here are links: foggy mountainssleeping bearfox in the snow.

The nightstand and the chair are both Amazon finds. The nightstand is great (built-in charging station!), and the chair is…meh. I chose it from my own brown leather chair roundup post, it’s the cheapest option. It’s fine, but I’d like to swap it for something old, broken-in, and actually leather. Maybe with some caning. Oh, and the brass floor lamp is vintage….thank you, Facebook Marketplace.

The curtain is made from an extra flat sheet that I hung with ring clips, because I couldn’t find a legit curtain that felt right. The wardrobe is vintage, also from Marketplace. It’s not a huge amount of closet space, but it’s more than enough for boy levels of clothing.

bedroom without a closet?

Next, we swing around to the last wall, which is absolutely not photo-worthy, but it does hold the boys’ favorite thing in the room: the TV. It’s big, on a swivel mount, and perfect for Call of Duty at maximum comfort.

In this in-between, nobody-lives-here stage, the spot below the TV was empty. But right now it’s home to a mismatched desk and an impressive cup collection. Before that, it was a weight bench and a pile of dumbbells. Next month, who knows? At this point, I’m just along for the ride.

Want to watch the whole thing come together in less time than it takes to microwave leftovers? I have that too –

And with that, I think we’re finished talking about this space….at least until the kid shuffle happens again and I get to finish it all the way.
