What’s your Interior Design Style? Take the Quiz!

Ever stand in your living room, stare at your walls, and think, “What even is my style?” You’re not the only one. With so many design terms floating around (modern, rustic, coastal-grandmillennial-ish, French country with a boho twist), it’s no wonder we all feel a little confused. But here’s the thing: once you figure out your style, decorating becomes a whole lot easier (and way more fun).

I want you to love your home. Not just kinda-like it, but really love it, because it feels like you and not like a catalog or someone else’s Pinterest board. So about a year ago, I set out on a mission to create the most comprehensive interior design style quiz ever. I went all in, mapping out 22 different styles to cover every possible option. And…I completely overwhelmed myself and gave up, because creating a quiz with 22 outcomes is ridiculous. I’m not even sure it’s possible…at least in a form that anyone would ever want to take.

Then, a couple of months ago (after I had recovered from my overzealous quiz-making trauma), I decided to give quiz creation another shot. I took a step back, and narrowed things down to seven parent design styles. These are broad, foundational looks that most other design styles fall under. They’re not meant to box you in, they’re meant to give you a strong starting point. As you can imagine, creating this quiz was WAY easier, and I actually finished it this time. Ever heard the term K.I.S.S. – Keep It Simple, Stupid? Yeah…lesson learned.

So now, you get to take the quiz! It’s just 12 quick questions – no overthinking, no design jargon, and no wrong answers. In less than five minutes you’ll have a clear idea of your core design style, which makes decorating (or even just shopping) way easier. It’s low commitment, surprisingly fun, and honestly? A lot more helpful than scrolling Pinterest for three hours and still feeling stuck.

(Also, you don’t have to enter your email address to see your quiz results, because I think that’s annoying.)

Now, let’s talk about the seven design styles featured in the quiz.

The Seven Parent Interior Design Styles

I won’t lie, narrowing it down to seven was hard. The truth is, most homes aren’t just one style. Design is more of a web than a strict set of categories. Styles overlap, blend, and borrow from each other. And honestly, that’s what makes it so fun.

I chose these seven styles because they serve as the foundation for so many others. They’re broad enough to give you room to play, but defined enough to help you see where your preferences land. Think of them as your style’s starting point – not a fixed label, just a helpful direction. Once you know your starting point, it’s so much easier to mix styles with intention and create a space that actually feels like you.

Alright, enough yapping. Let’s take a quick look at each one of the core styles.

1. Modern

Clean lines, high contrast, and a “less is more” mindset.

Modern style is all about clean lines, open space, and keeping things simple. It leans hard into function – furniture that works, rooms that flow, and not a bunch of extra fluff. You’ll see a lot of wood, metal, leather, and neutral tones, with furniture that’s sleek and low-profile.

But modern doesn’t mean cold or boring. The key is mixing textures (like a smooth leather chair next to a cozy woven rug) and layering in warm wood tones, soft lighting, or a few bold accents to keep it from feeling like a showroom.

If you like your home to feel calm, uncluttered, and a little bit edgy (but still livable), modern design might be your thing. It’s that sweet spot between minimal and cozy.

2. Traditional

Classic elegance with timeless details.

Traditional style is like the comfy-but-classy grandma of interior design. Think symmetry, rich wood tones, timeless furniture, and details that feel a little fancy but not over-the-top. You’ll see tufted sofas, curved arms, dark woods, and lots of textiles in classic patterns like florals, damask, and stripes.

The colors lean warm and neutral, but you’ll also see rich shades like navy, burgundy, or forest green that make things feel extra cozy and pulled together.

If you love a space that feels layered, timeless, and a little buttoned-up (but still welcoming), traditional style might be your thing. It’s perfect for people who appreciate quality, love a sense of history, and aren’t chasing the latest trend.

3. Rustic

Natural, timeworn textures with a cozy feel.

Rustic design is all about warmth, character, and a lived-in look that feels easy and natural. It leans into materials like weathered wood, stone, leather, worn metals, and cozy fabrics — things that feel solid, textured, and a little imperfect.

The colors are earthy and grounded – rich browns, deep greens, warm neutrals. Nothing too trendy or formal. Just pieces that feel they’ve been there forever (and probably aren’t going anywhere).

If you’re drawn to spaces that feel laid-back, cozy, and a bit nostalgic, this is your style. Rustic design is all about creating a home that feels effortless, comfortable, and genuine…like your favorite old sweater, but for your house.

3. Glam

Polished, bold, and designed to make a statement.

Glam design is for people who like a little drama — in a good way. It’s bold, elegant, and unapologetically pretty. Think shiny finishes, rich fabrics, and just the right amount of sparkle. Velvet, lacquer, marble, gold… if it looks luxurious, glam says yes please.

The vibe is polished but fun, not stuffy. You might see tufted furniture, mirrored accents, statement chandeliers, high-contrast color palettes (like black, white, and jewel tones), or softer takes that incorporate neutrals and pastels. It’s all about layering textures and finishes to create something that feels elevated and exciting.

Glam also tends to play well with others. It often gets mixed into styles like modern, traditional, eclectic, and even boho to add a little luxury and shine. Whether you go all-in or just sprinkle in a few glam touches, it’s a great way to make a space feel more elevated.

5. Bohemian

Free-spirited, layered, and full of personality.

Boho style is relaxed, creative, and chock-full of personality. It’s that layered, collected look that mixes colors, textures, and patterns without worrying too much about matching. You’ll see a variety of natural materials (rattan, wood, linen, and jute) paired with global-inspired prints, vintage finds, and an abundance of greenery. Like…so many plants.

The beauty of boho design is that it doesn’t follow strict rules. Some boho spaces lean neutral with lots of white, beige, and earthy tones, while others go all-in on rich, saturated hues like deep green, warm terracotta, mustard yellow, even pink. There’s no single “right” way to do it, which is kinda the whole point.

If you’re drawn to a home that feels collected rather than decorated, this is your style.

6. Coastal

Light, airy spaces with a touch of seaside charm.

Coastal style is all about bringing that light, breezy, beach house feeling into your home — even if you’re miles from the ocean. It’s clean and casual, with soft colors, natural textures, and a big focus on comfort. Think sandy neutrals, soft blues, linen fabrics, light wood tones, and a whole lot of natural light.

You won’t find heavy furniture or dark colors here. Coastal spaces feel open and easygoing, with simple styling that never tries too hard. It’s NOT about seashell decor or anchors everywhere, it’s about creating a calm, airy space that makes you feel like you can exhale.

If you love homes that feel fresh, unfussy, and just a little bit like vacation, coastal style might be right up your alley.

7. Industrial

Urban, raw, and effortlessly cool.

Industrial style pulls inspiration from old warehouses and factories, but it’s more “effortlessly cool” than cold or sterile. It’s all about raw, honest materials — think exposed brick, metal pipes, weathered wood, and worn leather — layered in a way that feels intentional and lived-in. I once heard someone call it “grunge farmhouse,” and honestly, that nails it.

Industrial design features darker colors, cool statement lighting, and wide open spaces that show off the bones of the room. The furniture is solid and no-nonsense, with clean lines and just enough wear to give it some character. It’s a mix of old and new, hard and soft — reclaimed wood paired with sleek metal, a cozy wool rug up against an old brick wall.

If you’re into spaces with texture, character, and just a little bit of attitude, industrial style might be your thing.
